Ganesh in graphic arts |
Representations of God Ganesh have been innumerable in the domain of stone or metal carvings from long time as well as nowadays; similarly, one can easily understand that Ganesh drawings, paintings and all sorts of expression in the graphic arts are most important too. The rich indian tradition in these was obvious from the 17th century and later, in traditional schools of painting, in Rajasthan and elsewhere in north India, mainly.
In modern times, under less "refined" but nevertheless vivid styles, the images of hindu deities, and particularly Ganesh, provide endless inspiration to thousands artists.
This art must be artificially divided into different branches :
The host of Ganesh representation in postcards and posters : the chapter of
folk images provides a representative range of them.
Artists who are renowned at the indian national level or at the international level benefit the rapid
economic growth of India and the wealthy part of its population who helps them to increase their reputation; to this first category belongs
obviously a fine selection of unique paintings and sculptures that the New York gallery belonging to
Peterlouisarts kindly permitted us to reproduce here.

In a medium range, however interesting, the "local artists" who expect to improve their present status
can be represented by paintings sold at the BanarasArtCulture Gallery (Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh),

Printings, lithos and other kinds of image reproductions, known from the 17th century in indian art, but which
expanded during the first part of the 20th century, with the development of lithography technics, are presented in this chapter. Some are rather old
images that we were lucky to collect during our travels. Others have been discovered on the Web on Museum, Art galleries or private collections websites.
